The most common answer when asking the kids whats their biggest dream in life was to be a successful person and make their parents happy.
Their job dreams are similar to all the other kids in the world. They want to become a Soldier, Policeman, Doctor, Chef, Vet, Professional football player or Gamer. In easier years the families on the island only lived from fishing and farming, some used to work in the old pearl farm on the island. Their lives are simple. No electricity, poor alimentation, little education. Many parents can’t read and write, some don’t even speak Indonesian (only the local language “Sasak”. The kids always had a very simple but happy and free island live, playing on the beach, catching fish with their hands, helping to feed the cows and goats. Since tourism started many people got better jobs, people started to have smartphones. The new technology opened new worlds and new dreams. Especially the kids of poorer families have to help and take responsibility since they are very young. Do continue school after 6th grade was impossible as there was no money to pay for the school and the kids where need to bring money home. They do jobs like bringing sand and building, feeding the cows, moving the goats. One reason for us to start the project was to see the kids wish to learn. They love to read and wish to learn new subjects like English.
SPONSOR A CHILD
After 6thgrade (11-12 years old) children travel to the mainland to continue their Education as the school on Gili Asahan doesnt provide secondary education. Unfortunately, many children haven’t been able to do so in the past as their parents couldn’t afford it and kids had to work and help to provide food to the family. Our goal is to make sure all the kids continue secondary education. After a group of volunteers from the boarding school Madrasah Tsanawiyah Alam Sayang Ibu in Mataram stayed on the island for a week the kids dreamed of going to the same school. After visiting the bearding school together wish the kids and parents everybody was convinced that this is there right school. Unfortunately after a test only 4 kids were excepted. The monthly costs are very high that’s why we are concern to not being able to found all the kids in the future and dream of fining long term sponsors to help the kids to continue their education there. The other kids who can’t join will go to a boarding school in Brambang not too far from Gili Asahan. Costs are a way lower but still hard to afford for the families. Your help is needed. The sponsorship could mean to donate money monthly but if wanted also to be in touch with the kids and follow their process of growing up.
